Technical Lead

This is an established health, safety and wellbeing company with over 25 years’ experience, supporting clients across health, education, NGO and private sectors throughout New Zealand. Their purpose is simple: to help organisations create safer, healthier and more engaged workplaces.

With a small team of around 10 people, the culture is collaborative, practical and relationship-focused. The business is stepping into its next phase – growing its IT capability through GOSH (an established online platform), new self-sign-on products for small businesses and education providers, and AI-enabled tools that help clients manage workplace risks more effectively.

As an All-of-Government approved provider, they are trusted by a wide range of government departments and agencies.

About the Role
This is a 12 month fixed term contract for a hands-on technical lead who wants to write code while providing technical leadership. You’ll spend the majority of your time (60-70%) in active development – building features, solving technical problems, and shipping working software. The remaining time focuses on technical direction, mentoring, and working with clients to shape solutions.

You’ll work alongside a small development team (IT Technical Specialist, IT Developer, and Intern(s)), with support from external delivery partners as needed.
Reporting to the Chief Product Officer and working closely with the Managing Director, you’ll play a key role in shaping both the products and the technical practices as the company grows.

Key responsibilities
Development (60-70%)

  • Writing production code for GOSH (our Zoho based SaaS platform)
  • Troubleshooting and resolving technical issues across the stack
  • Building integrations and custom configurations for clients
  • Delivering secure, well-tested code that meets client requirements
  • Supporting and improving internal systems (CRM, website, dev-ops,)

Technical Leadership (30-40%)

  • Creating and maintaining a development roadmap that builds business asset value
  • Mentoring developers and establishing practical development standards
  • Working directly with clients to scope requirements and explain technical solutions
  • Coordinating with external IT providers and delivery partners
  • Introducing fit-for-purpose processes – enough structure to work efficiently, without over-engineering. You should be familiar with modern development methodologies such as Agile and how these can work well with a small team.
  • Keeping technical documentation current and useful

This is a genuine blend of leadership, innovation, and delivery, well suited to someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves while guiding others.

Skills and Experience
Essential

  • 5+ years developing and shipping software products
  • Strong hands-on coding ability – you enjoy writing code and do it well
  • Experience with cloud platforms, APIs, and modern web technologies
  • Practical experience with AI/LLM tools and integration
  • Experience mentoring or leading small technical teams that help others grow.  
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical clients
  • A practical, customer focused mindset with a track record of delivering work on time and to quality

Desirable

  • Experience with Zoho Creator and Deluge scripting (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Understanding of SaaS product development and maintenance
  • Experience in implementing practical IT processes in established teams.
